About

A boutique CPA firm for healthcare professionals and incorporated business owners in Manitoba

Barker CPA was founded by Evan Barker, a Chartered Professional Accountant based in St. Adolphe, Manitoba, with one objective: to give incorporated physicians, dentists, veterinarians, and other regulated health professionals and business owners access to the kind of proactive, specialist tax advice that most accounting firms do not offer. Why Barker CPA

Why healthcare professionals and business owners choose Barker CPA

There is no shortage of accountants. What is harder to find is a CPA firm that specializes in your situation, is reachable when you need them, and treats your file like it matters beyond tax season. Here is what sets Barker CPA apart.

Niche expertise, not generic advice

We focus specifically on incorporated physicians, regulated health professionals, and owner-managed businesses. That focus means we understand the planning decisions that matter most for your situation, including Medical Professional Corporation structuring, salary versus dividends optimization, and Lifetime Capital Gains Exemption planning.

Available when it matters

Most accountants are hard to reach and only show up at filing time. We are always reachable when you have a question, and we connect with clients after the books close to review compensation structure, retained earnings, and any planning decisions going forward.

Fully digital and paperless

Everything we do is online. Onboarding takes under five minutes through our digital intake. Signatures are collected digitally and documents are uploaded to a secure client portal.

Bilingual service available in French

If you prefer to communicate or conduct your consultations in French, we've got you covered.

Evan Barker, CPA

Founder & CEO

  • CPA (2023)
  • B.Com.(Hons.), UofM 2020
  • CPA In-Depth Tax Program

Evan Barker, CPA founded Barker CPA to serve a specific gap in the Manitoba market: incorporated physicians, dentists, and regulated health professionals who needed specialist tax advice. He regularly speaks to graduating classes at the Max Rady College of Medicine and the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry at the University of Manitoba, covering how new physicians and dentists should structure their financial life from day one. He has also presented to the Manitoba Alliance of Health Regulatory Colleges in partnership with the Government of Manitoba. Evan's connection to the healthcare community extends beyond his professional practice. Having a spouse who is a healthcare professional has made serving those in the medical field a natural fit.

He earned his Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from the University of Manitoba in 2020, obtained his CPA designation in 2023, and is currently completing CPA Canada's In-Depth Tax Program, one of the highest regarded tax specialization credentials available in Canada. His work spans corporate tax, consulting and advisory including estate freezes, corporate restructuring, and LCGE planning, and owner-manager compensation planning for incorporated professionals across Manitoba. Before founding Barker CPA, he served on the finance committee of the Winnipeg Soccer Federation.

Evan handles client relationships, tax strategy, and the growth and development of the firm. Outside of work he is a husband and father, and you can find him on a golf course or hiking trail with the family dog.

How we work

How Barker CPA works with incorporated professionals across Manitoba

Most people have had an accountant who was hard to reach, only called at tax time, and never once asked about the bigger picture. Here is how we work differently.

01

We start with a conversation

A short call to understand your situation, your goals, and whether we are the right fit. No commitment, no pressure, no invoice.

02

We review your full picture

If you are switching from another firm, we request your prior-year files, review what has been filed, and identify anything that was missed. You are never starting blind.

03

We plan before we file

Before your year-end closes, we reach out to discuss your compensation, your retained earnings, and any decisions that need to happen before the books are done. Filing is the last step, not the first.

04

We stay in your corner

Questions during the year, CRA letters, a business decision that has tax implications, a quick call on something you are unsure about. You have direct access to the people who know your file, not a general inbox.

Our network

A professional referral network for healthcare professionals and business owners

Tax is one piece of the financial picture for incorporated professionals and business owners. We work closely with a trusted network of professionals across Manitoba who share our commitment to well-coordinated, client-first advice. When you need a referral, we make the right connection.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about Barker CPA, our team, and how we work

Straight answers on who we work with, how we charge, and where we are.

Ask us directly
Are you currently accepting new clients?

Yes, we are accepting new clients. We take on a limited number of new engagements at a time to ensure every client gets the attention they deserve. If you are interested in working with us, the best first step is booking a consultation so we can understand your situation and confirm we are the right fit before moving forward.

Where are you located and do you meet clients in person?

Barker CPA is based in St. Adolphe, Manitoba, just south of Winnipeg. We operate as a fully digital firm, which means we serve clients across Manitoba entirely online. Onboarding, document signing, bookkeeping, and communication all happen digitally. We do not require in-person meetings, though we are happy to arrange them for clients who prefer it. The digital-first approach means your location within Manitoba does not affect the quality or responsiveness of the service you receive.

Who do you typically work with?

Our client base falls into two main groups. The first is regulated health professionals, including physicians, dentists, veterinarians, optometrists, chiropractors, and other incorporated health professionals across Manitoba. The second is incorporated professionals and small business owners, including lawyers, engineers, consultants, realtors, financial advisors, mortgage brokers, and growing owner-managed businesses. What our clients have in common is that they are incorporated, they are doing well, and they want an accountant who does more than show up at tax time.

What does the onboarding process look like?

Once we confirm the engagement, onboarding is fully digital and takes under five minutes on your end. You complete our online intake questionnaire, and if bookkeeping is part of the engagement, connect your QuickBooks Online file or we coordinate the transfer of records from your previous accountant on your behalf. You do not need to print anything, mail anything, or come to an office.

How do you charge for your services?

We work on fixed fees, not hourly billing. You know what you are paying before we start and there are no surprise invoices at the end of the year. Our fees reflect the expertise, planning value, and level of access you receive, not just the time it takes to prepare a return. Clients who work with us are typically looking for more than a filing service, and our pricing reflects that. We discuss fees transparently at the start of every engagement. Book a consultation and we will walk through your situation and give you a clear picture of what working together looks like.

Do you work with clients who are not incorporated?

Yes. While most of our planning work is built around incorporated structures, we prepare personal tax returns for individuals at all income levels and employment situations, including employees, self-employed individuals, rental property owners, and people with investment income. If you are not yet incorporated but thinking about it, we are also happy to work through whether incorporation makes sense for your situation before you make that decision.

What makes Barker CPA different from a larger accounting firm?

Larger accounting firms often rely on multiple layers of staff, meaning the person you first meet may not be the one preparing your tax return or advising you throughout the year. As your file moves through different levels of review, communication can become less personal and less direct.

At Barker CPA, we take a different approach. The professionals you work with are the same people preparing your tax returns, managing your accounting, and providing advice year-round. We believe strong relationships lead to better advice, faster communication, and a deeper understanding of your goals. For business owners and incorporated professionals who value personalized service and direct access to their accountant, that is a meaningful difference.

Do you offer bilingual accounting services in French and English?

Yes. Barker CPA offers bilingual service in French and English. If you prefer to communicate or conduct your consultations in French, we've got you covered. Please note that all client documentation and tax filings are prepared in English. Nous sommes heureux de servir les professionnels et propriétaires d'entreprises francophones au Manitoba.

Do you serve clients outside of Winnipeg and the surrounding area?

Yes, and this is one of the most common questions we get. Barker CPA operates as a fully remote, digital-first accounting firm. We serve incorporated professionals and business owners across Manitoba and Canada, including Brandon, Portage la Prairie, Steinbach, Neepawa, Thompson, The Pas, and rural and northern communities, as well as clients in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, and the Atlantic provinces. Everything we do, including onboarding, bookkeeping, tax preparation, document signing, and day-to-day communication, happens online. Your location has no impact on the quality or responsiveness of the service you receive. However, we are currently not offering services to clients residing in Quebec.

Let's see if we are a good fit.

Book a consultation and we will walk through your current structure, your goals, and whether Barker CPA is the right firm for where you are headed. No commitment, no invoice, no pressure.
